Staff Sgt. Paul Zimmerman has devoted 14 years to active duty, first as an Infantryman and then as an EOD Team Leader. He deployed to Iraq and Syria in 2016-2017, 2019, and 2021-2022, with additional missions in Kuwait, Jordan, and Egypt.
His world changed in December 2024 when he experienced a traumatic crush injury to his abdomen, leaving him with multiple back injuries, chronic pain, and an uncertain future. After eight months of intense recovery, Zimmerman was assigned to the Soldier Recovery Unit at Fort Campbell.
Prior to joining the SRU, he felt lost, now, with the concrete goal of competing in the Warrior Games, he has a new mindset and purpose.
Through the support of the SRU leadership and trainers, he found new purpose in adaptive sports. Zimmerman thanks his wife, Victoria, their five children, and their bonus kid for their support through the tough times. He also thanks Brad and Brian from Herndon Archery for their unwavering encouragement.
