Capt. Vanessa Munro was commissioned as a Field Artillery officer in 2018 after completing ROTC at the University of Washington. After four years in her branch, she was selected for the Army’s Interservice Physician Assistant Program. However, on December 29, 2023, a catastrophic car accident on her way to clinical training resulted in a severe traumatic brain injury, requiring brain surgery and an extended coma. Following months of hospitalization and intensive rehabilitation at Walter Reed, Munro worked through significant physical and emotional challenges. Her therapy included occupational, physical, and speech sessions, with swimming becoming a source of profound joy. A year after the accident, she tried adaptive skiing, which reignited her sense of freedom and confidence. From there, she progressed to walking, running, and cycling. In the past year, Munro has completed a 5K, a triathlon, and the Army Ten-Miler. Munro now looks forward to competing in the Warrior Games as she continues to push her limits and redefine what is possibleV.
