Ret. Capt. Carlos Rivera served as an Army behavioral health nurse and was deployed in 2022 and 2023.
Rivera was assigned to the Soldier Recovery Unit at Fort Hood following a lower back injury.
A former professional volleyball player for eight years, he credits adaptive sports with helping restore his confidence and reminding him that he can still stay active and engaged with his family despite the lasting effects of his injury.
Through adaptive sports, Rivera discovered new opportunities to compete and remain active. He now participates in sports such as wheelchair rugby, wheelchair basketball and sitting volleyball, while also enjoying pickleball and basketball.
Outside of competition, Rivera enjoys spending time with his family and coaching his children in youth baseball and softball. Rivera says his goal moving forward is simple: to stay positive, enjoy life and continue finding joy in the things he loves.
The married father of four from Princeton, Texas, is honored to represent the Army at the 2026 Warrior Games.
