Ret. Capt. Channda Mitchell was appointed as an investigating officer for a case that required travel to multiple locations in Iraq and Syria on deployment in 2024. During a return flight from Syria, her helicopter banked sharply during evasive maneuvers, causing her to strike her head.
After experiencing intense sensations, she described as “being electrocuted,” loss of control on her left side, and severe sensitivity to light and noise, medical imaging confirmed a severe spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury.
Mitchell was medically evacuated to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where she underwent surgery to relieve pressure on her spinal cord, replaced damaged discs, and fuse cervical vertebrae. She is currently receiving care through the Soldier Recovery Unit at Fort Bliss and the Intrepid Spirit Center at William Beaumont at William Beaumont Army Medical Center.
Mitchell credits her family, battle buddies, and the Fort Bliss SRU team for standing by her, and she recognizes the Intrepid Spirit Center at William Beaumont at William Beaumont Army Medical Center for supporting her healing, both physically and mentally.
Motto:
