Capt. Luis Avila enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2000 and later earned his commission in 2004. Avila built a distinguished career in the military police, serving in multiple leadership roles and completing several combat deployments in support of Operation Noble Eagle, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
During his fifth deployment, Avila sustained catastrophic injuries from an improvised explosive device that left him completely paralyzed. Despite severe physical and cognitive trauma, he emerged from a coma and regained speech and motor function through determination and extensive rehabilitation.
He came deeply involved in adaptive sports, earning first place in the Amputee Warrior Men category of the Army Ten-Miler and securing a place on Team Army for the Warrior Games, where he won multiple medals. Avila later represented Team USA at the first Winter Invictus Games in Canada in 2025. His service and resilience have earned him numerous honors, including the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart and the Order of the Marechaussee in Silver.
