Maj. Patricia Zumwalt has served nearly 17 years in the United States Army, including three overseas assignments. In January 2024, she was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy related to Fabry disease and began enzyme replacement therapy as part of her treatment plan.
Following her diagnosis, Zumwalt was assigned to Soldier Recovery Unity at Fort Sam Houston, where she was introduced to adaptive sports as part of her recovery and rehabilitation. Participation in adaptive sports supported both her physical and mental recovery, providing structured opportunities for healing, confidence-building, and continued engagement in a team environment.
During this period, she completed the Disability Evaluation System process and was initially found unfit for continued service. She was subsequently approved for continuation on active duty through an exception-to-policy determination and returned to duty.
Zumwalt credits the Soldier Recovery Unit and adaptive sports team for their support throughout her recovery. She says that competing in the Warrior Games is both an honor and a privilege to represent Team Army. It demonstrates her resilience, readiness and continued commitment to service.
Motto:
"Keep moving forward."
– Maj. Patricia Zumwalt
