Sgt.1st Class David Hong served 16 years active duty as a Religious Affairs Specialist NCO, with deployments to Afghanistan in 2019, Korea in 2011 and 2020. On July 7, 2022, Sgt.1st Class Hong was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer. He has had nine major surgeries and 23 chemotherapy treatments, four cancer surgeries, and one major surgery removing part of the stomach wall and liver.

Sgt.1st Class Hong arrived at Fort Carson Soldier Recovery Unit September 2023, he also has battled other orthopedic injuries to both knees. Adaptive sports have helped the 52 year old Hong deal with PTSD, anxiety, depression, sleep apnea, and severe neuropathy. He has had the full support of his Army family, wife and kids, and friends to navigate and battle this terminal illness. Fighting cancer is not solitary but a team effort through adaptive sports.
