Alvarez has been deployed seven times. His deployments include the 25th ID on a humanitarian mission, another with the 101st Airborne Division on a peacekeeping mission, and five combat deployments, three with the 101st Airborne Division, one with the 10th MTN Division, and one with the 4th ID.

With numerous deployments throughout his career, his life-changing event occurred in October 2013 with the 101st. On a foot patrol with his squad, they were ambushed with RPG and heavy machine gun fire, and Alvarez was knocked to the ground. The blast left him with TBI diagnosis in 2023.

In late 2022 Alvarez began experiencing stroke like symptoms. In February 2023, he was diagnosed with a rare form of brain disease called Moyamoya, where there is .09% diagnosed with this disease. It would later be found out that Alvarez unknowingly suffered at a minimum of three strokes.
