Staff Sgt. Tam Hoang dedicated a decade to the Army Reserve, with deployments in Qatar in 2016-2017, Africa in 2018-2020, and Syria in 2022-2024. On the last tour to Syria, his life changed forever. After surviving an unexploded ordnance and drone explosion, he suffered two traumatic brain injuries within the span of two months.

The 29 year old Staff Sgt. thought his life was over until he arrived at JBLM Soldier Recovery Unit where he was introduced to adaptive sports. He says adaptive sports gave him a sense of purpose and contributed to the improvement of his mental and physical health. Staff Sgt. Hoang felt like he was a part of a community, being around other soldiers who understood his struggle. He would like to thank his wife for walking alongside him on his path to recovery.
